Use ChatGPT for your Canadian taxes without sharing your SIN

AI can explain a CRA letter, walk you through which slip goes where, or sanity-check your RRSP math. Every one of those documents has your Social Insurance Number on it. The AI doesn't need it.

General information, not tax advice. AI answers about tax rules can be out of date or wrong; confirm anything important with CRA or a professional.

What people ask AI at tax time

T4s, T5s, RRSP receipts and CRA letters carry your SIN, full name and home address. Your SIN is the one number the government tells you to share only when legally required. A chat window isn't that.

What the AI actually needs

Box numbers, amounts, dates and your question.

Employee: Jordan Tremblay · SIN 046 454 286
Box 14 Employment income: 68,400.00 · Box 52 Pension adjustment: 4,120.00

Employee: #PERSON_1 · SIN #ID_NUMBER_1
Box 14 Employment income: 68,400.00 · Box 52 Pension adjustment: 4,120.00

The AI can still explain that the pension adjustment reduces next year's RRSP room, and by how much. It just doesn't know whose T4 it is.

How to do it with Hushtag

  1. Copy the text from your slip, CRA My Account letter or receipt. (For a PDF, see our PDF guide.)
  2. Paste into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with Hushtag on. SINs, names, addresses, postal codes and account numbers become hashtags before the site receives them.
  3. Ask your question.
  4. Press Alt+Shift+S to read the answer with your details restored, on your screen only.

Doing a family's returns? Each person gets their own hashtag (#PERSON_1, #PERSON_2), so the AI can say "#PERSON_2 should claim the medical expenses" without knowing anyone's name.
